Teenagere SKAL sove længe

De unge på Egå Ungdoms-Højskole sover ikke længe, de får bare dækket deres naturlige søvnbehov. Og sådan burde det være alle andre steder i uddannelsessystemet. Man bør således ikke tøve et sekund med at ændre ungdomsuddannelsernes mødetider i forbindelse med en kommende reform. Resultatet vil være glade, mere motiverede og lærevillige elever.

”Har fornøjelsen af at være formand for en skole, der planlægger evidensbaseret fremfor bare at følge gamle vaner”, skrev Dennis Nørmark i en statusopdatering om søvn-politikken på Egå Ungdoms-Højskole.

En stor del af Danmarks befolkning diskuterede teenageres søvnmønstre i begyndelsen af november 2014. Det hele begyndte med Signe Gads læserbrev i Politiken, hvorefter debatten bredte sig til Jyllandsposten, Reporterne på Radio24syv (11/11), Ekstrabladet, TV2; ja, og tænk engang, til Norge. Og selvfølgelig alle med den let provokerende vinkel, at de unge får lov at sove længe. Men sådan er det ikke, vi giver dem blot en mulighed for at få dækket deres naturlige søvnbehov: Det manglede da bare.

Jeg har lavet en lille forespørgsel blandt vores nuværende elever om deres søvnmønstre. Desværre har ikke alle svaret – og en enkelt ikke-teenager har sneget sig ind (i gruppen af dem, der går i seng mellem midnat og 01.00). Desuden stillede Jyllands-Postens Edith Rasmussen i et interview det intelligente og relevante spørgsmål, om vi havde spurgt vores forhenværende elever, om deres erfaringer med søvnmønstrene, når de efter at have været på Egå Ungdoms-Højskole fortsætter i arbejde eller på en ungdomsuddannelse. Det har vi ikke, men det må vi til at gøre.

Mangel på søvn er tortur

Mangel på søvn ødelægger hukommelsen og koncentrationsevnen, hæmmer (eller ødelægger) hjernens udvikling. Desuden er søvnmangel associeret med fedmeproblemer, hjertekarsygdomme og depression. Og så er det et yndet tortur-middel at tage søvnen fra folk.

Tænk, hvis vi kunne ændre noget her i verden blot med henvisning til det meningsfulde og behagelige? Det kan man ikke, og det gjorde vi heller ikke. Vi ændrede mødetiderne, fordi vi døjede med søvndrukne elever. Og sådanne er svære at oplyse og danne, og da netop oplysning til livet er formålet med en højskole, måtte vi gøre noget. Nu spiser vi morgenmad fra klokken 9.00 til 9.45, og begynder undervisningen klokken 10.00.

Det er flere år siden nu, og jeg husker ikke de præcise omstændigheder. Pludselig var der bare en del viden, der dukkede op på samme tid og fik en løsningsmodel til at materialisere sig. Bevæggrundene var de følgende:

  • Samfundet havde udviklet sig fra et landbrugs- og industrisamfund til et videns- og servicesamfund.
  • Vi fik ny viden om teenagehjerner.
  • Og endelig faldt vi over Camilla Krings artikel om søvnmønstre og eksamensresultater.

Disse tre faktorer gjorde os i stand til at ændre på tingene. Ikke alle ansatte på skolen var lige begejstrede for idéen, men det blev besluttet at vi skule forsøge os. Samfundet havde ændret sig på en sådan måde, at det ikke længere gav mening at insistere på at møde klokken 8.00.

Samfundsforandringerne

At samfundet har forandret sig vidste vi selvfølgelig allerede fra sociologibøgerne (vi kunne dog også bare have kigget ud af vinduerne), men nu kunne vi bruge den viden konkret. Der er absolut ingen grunde til at holde fast i gamle mødetider af hensyn til arbejdsmarkedet.

Jeg undrer mig, når folk taler om mælkespændte yvere og 8-16 samfundet i debattens kommentarspor. Hvor var disse mennesker i samfundsfagstimerne – eller lå timerne måske mellem klokken 8.00 og 10.00 – eller har de bare ingen vinduer?

Maskinerne har overtaget i landbruget, der står ingen køer og lider. Mange industriarbejdspladser er rykket ud af landet. Og pga. af transport-revolutionen kører industriens input og output konstant rundt på veje og skinner med det, der skal benyttes og afsættes. De er for længst gået væk fra det her med store lagerpladser og vareindleveringen er løbende.

Der er ganske enkelt ikke tale om et monomant, ensrettet arbejdsmarked længere. Det kan jo ikke være dem, der serverer aftenkaffen på plejehjemmet, eller sygeplejerskerne på natholdet, ambulancekørerne, politiet, folk i detailhandlen eller dem, der lukker supermarkederne klokken 21.00, man tænker på, når man hævder, at vi gør de unge en bjørnetjeneste, forkæler dem, fortsætter curling-kulturen, og hvad der nu ellers har lydt af indvendinger. Langt hen ad vejen er det kun dags- og uddannelsesinstitutioner, der kører efter den gamle industrimodel.

Den værste indvending, jeg har hørt, kom fra provokatøren, den konservative folketingskandidat, Mads Holger på Radio24syv (se ovenstående link), som hævdede, at nu foregik undervisningen på elevernes præmisser. Til det må jeg blot svare, at undervisningen nu foregår på læringens præmisser, før var det på søvnens, og det var der ikke megen mening i.

Teenagehjerner

Endelig hørte jeg hjerneforskeren Christian Gerlach om teenage-hjerner på et seminar om netop disse. Med evolutionsteorien i bagagen – og selvfølgelig hjerneforskningen ovenpå – kunne han fortælle, at teenagehjerner har en anden emotionel og kognitiv profil end børn og voksnes. De er, på grund af hormonelle forandringer – eller forandringer i hjernens signalstoffer – mere risikovillige og mindre modtagelige for straf; eller deres konsekvensberegnings-aggregat er ude af balance, hvilket jeg tror, de fleste forældre til teenagere har oplevet.

Det er der gode grunde til. Vores evolution har maget det sådan, at det er i disse år, de unge skal forberede sig på at forlade hulen og lære at stå på egne ben. Og så er det faktisk smart, hvis man tør lidt mere, end man gjorde i barndommen. Det skaber selvstændighed – og dem, der i fortiden var emotionelt overstyrede og dumdristige, sorterede evolutionen fra. Det er også i disse år, de unge skal danne deres identitet, og som sociologibøgerne i tilgift kan berette, er identitetsarbejdet i den postindustrielle samfund en temmelig omfattende opgave. Og så det er godt at være vågen.

Det sociale fylder ekstra meget i teenageårene. Det er nemlig også i disse år – eller det synes evolutionen – at de unge skal finde sig en mage og sende generne videre. Deres hjerner reagerer kraftigere på ansigtsudtryk, end de gør hos os andre, hvilket betyder, at de konstant er opmærksomme på, hvordan de vurderes af andre – sikkert også som et led i identitetsdannelsen – og det er forbundet med stor fare at falde igennem de sociale fællesskaber og ende som ensom. Det er med andre ord ikke lige så vigtigt, hvad en voksen mener, som det er at gøre sig godt blandt jævnaldrende.

Altså konkluderede vi, at vi kunne tale stolper op og stolper ned om det vigtige i at møde til undervisningen, være vågen og derfor gå tidligt i seng osv. De unge kunne skam godt se fornuften i det hele, sagde ja, og lovede forbedringer, men når det kom til handling – ja, så var de ikke helt vågne. Men indsigterne fra Gerlach forklarede os således, hvorfor alle vores hidtidige pædagogiske tiltag, samtaler og dialoger med de unge ikke rigtig gav resultat. Det er ikke sådan, at de unge mangler fornuft og kognitive evner, de virker fint om eftermiddagen og til fællesmøderne. Der er bare noget andet, der tæller mere.

Søvnmønstre

Der findes ikke A- og B-mennesker, er en anden indvending. Det er ikke videnskabeligt bevist, er der nogen, der siger. Camilla Kring vil sige noget andet. Og under alle omstændigheder har vi forskellige søvnmønstre gennem livsaldrene, hvilket man blandt andet kan læse om i Peter Lund Madsens bog om hjernen, hvis man da ikke har småbørn eller bedsteforældre, man kan iagttage det hos. Variation er den grundlæggende præmis i evolutionstanken. Ingen mennesker er ens. Og vi ved, at hjernens udvikling er dybt afhængig af søvn.

En af de slående ting Camilla Kring skriver, er, at de fleste unge mennesker synes at trives bedst mellem klokken 9.00 – 01.00. Hvilket stemmer ret godt overens med vores erfaringer – og i øvrigt den lille uvidenskabelige forespørgsel, jeg har foretaget blandt vores nuværende elever (se illustration ovenfor).

Og eleverne, ja, de er gladere, de lytter og deltager, og har – efter deres eget udsagn – bedre indlæring. Vi har jo ikke tests på en Højskole, for os er det vigtigste at tingene giver mening, for gør de det, så kommer også lysten og nysgerrigheden. Og sover man tilstrækkeligt, ja så har man endda en chance for at huske, hvad man har lært.

Hvordan kan vi kalde os voksne og ansvarlige med denne viden, og samtidig tvinge teenagere til at stå op efter omkring 6 timers søvn for at nå på gymnasiet til klokken 8.00, hvor de fleste dernæst spilder de to første timer?

  1. Jeg skynder mig lige at sige, at jeg ikke har nærlæst dine links, kun bladret lidt i dem. Jeg har tit hørt argumenterne for, at mødetiden burde rykkes for teenagere, men jeg er ikke overbevist. Ud fra den betragtning, at hjernerne fungerer bedre senere, skulle vores teenagere jo præstere dårligere i sommerhalvåret, hvor vi "tvinger" dem endnu tidligere op pga. sommertid, og det synes jeg bestemt ikke er tilfældet. Min egen erfaring – som mor til et udpræget B-menneske og to A-mennesker OG mange år som lærer i overbygningen – siger mig, at når vi stiller urene tilbage til normaltid, så "hjælper" det i tre dage, så har deres indre ur indrettet sig efter det, og det er lige svært at komme op og i omdrejninger.
    Jeg er dog helt enig i, at teenagere ofte får for lidt søvn.

    • Det er nok ikke god conduite at besvare et spørgsmål med et spørgsmål, så det vil jeg gøre. Hvad er grundene til, at vi ikke skulle rykke mødetiderne på ungdomsuddannelserne?

      Du er enig i, at mange får for lidt søvn. Det har potentielt svære konsekvenser, men selv når vi ser bort fra dem, så er de mindre i mine øjne tilstrækkelig grund til i det mindste at forsøge. Søvnmangel og koncentrationsbesvær er jo kontraproduktivt i en læringssituation.

      Jeg har ikke flere argumenter, end de mere eller mindre uddybede i teksten ovenfor, så hvis ikke de overbeviser dig om, at det er værd at forsøge, så kan jeg ikke.

      Og dog, måske er der flere grunde. En emne, jeg har savnet i debatten, drejer sig om livskvalitet og velvære. Hvis det højner livskvaliteten, hvis det er noget, vi har det godt med, får det bedre af, og det ikke har de helt store praktiske konsekvenser, hvorfor så ikke? Er det kristne arvesyndstanker, der sniger sig med i betragtningerne; er livet en straf. Well, så er det på tide, vi får lidt bedre fat i de gamle grækere.

      I forlængelse heraf, har jeg lidt indvendinger mod evidens-idéerne (selvom jeg ikke mener, der er noget galt med evidensen, men tværtimod er af den opfattelse, at den peger ret entydigt i retning af senere mødetider) og den en-sidige betragtning af skolelivet. Det er ikke kun skolen, det handler om for de unge, selvom vi lærere måske ville ønske, det var sådan. Det er hele dagen, hele tilværelsen, det drejer sig om, og det tror jeg ikke, vi har tilstrækkeligt blik for.

      "Hvis hjernen fungerer bedre" / "hvis maskinen smøres bedre" – men, vi er jo ikke maskiner, vi er biologiske væsner, og de ting, vi beskæftiger os med skal vi finde meningsfulde – eller målet med dem skal vi finde meningsfuldt eller værd at opnå (NB, her kunne der komme en lang smøre om Hegel og identitet, som noget der opstår gennem arbejdet). Og det er min fornemmelse – det er det, mange af mine elever, hvoraf en betragtelig del har været omkring gymnasiet, siger – at meningen med arbejdet forsvinder i, for dem, mystiske tåger i gymnasiet. Endskønt gymnasiet og de øvrige ungdomsuddannelser netop handler eller burde handle om at lære at forstå og håndtere verden, og at der ikke kan findes noget mere meningsfyldt identitetsdannene. Jeg tror, det her gælder om, at forene det sociale med det faglige – eller bringe de to facetter af livet tættere på hinanden. Det er nemt på en kostskole.

      Men kunne man få dækket sit søvnbehov inden skolen, hvis denne først begyndte klokken 10.00, så behøvede man ikke en lur om eftermiddagen, man behøvede ikke at bevæge sig gennem dagen som en zombie, man behøvede ikke at have dårlig samvittighed for ikke rigtig at hænge sammen ved timernes begyndelse. Man ville kunne arbejde konstruktivt til klokken 01.00 eller nå at se lidt til vennerne efter lektielæsning, man ville have bedre mulighed for at varetage et ungdomsjob. Det hele på den samme tid, for døgnet bliver ikke længere, vi bruger det blot på en bedre – og mere meningsgivende – måde.

      P.S. Jeg kan ikke rigtigt få vinter/sommertid til at passe ind i sammenhængen. Det "indre ur" / døgnrytmen styres af hypothalamus (en lille del af hjernen, der regulerer kroppens kemiske balance, tørst, temperatur, samt døgnrytme), som modtager signaler fra retina, altså information om lysstyrken i omgivelserne og signalerer videre til koglekirtlen, som udløser søvnhormonet melatonin. Det har altså noget med lys/mørke at gøre, men der er mere i det, som Peter Lund Madsen skriver, så er der søvnlignende "adfærd" meget ældre en hjerner: planter folder deres blomster og blade ind i skumringen, men tænk om ikke de gør det alligevel, hvis man stiller dem i konstant mørke (indtil de selvsagt døg pga manglende stofskifte). Det er damn kompliceret – så hard core, entydig evidens, er ikke det eneste, vi mennesker skal sigte efter. Næh, lad os få livskvalitet og eksistentiel mening på banen; det er jo ikke penge, der gør os lykkelige.

      Og tusind tak for din replik, det er herligt, når der er nogen, der gider diskutere disse ting. Jeg ville ønske de unge var vågne og bidrog med deres mening. Hvis de absolut vil møde klokken 8.00, så vil jeg ikke stille mig hindrende i vejen.

  2. Jeg har har tidligere gået på Egå ungdomshøjskole. Jeg kunne rigtig lide deres ide med at vi skulle møde klokken 10. Det gjorde at os elever var mere aktive i timerne og var friskere. Det hjalp ihvertfald mig rigtig meget. Det var en god rytme at komme ind i og nogen gange kan jeg godt savne det når jeg går i skole nu.

  3. Jeg gik på Egå Ungdomshøjskole i efteråret 2012. Jeg lagde ikke mærke til nogen forskel vedr. svøvn og mødetider før jeg startede i gymnasiet hjemme på Færøerne efter højskoleopholdet.

    Nu er jeg nærmest holdt op med at møde før kl 10, uanset hvornår dagen starter. For det får hverken jeg eller læreren noget ud af, og så ødelægger det resten af min dag. Det handler ikke kun om at man møder op uden at få noget ud af det, men det gør det også tit værre. At man sover i timen bliver næsten altid anset som dovenskab eller elevens egen skyld, der "bare skal gå tidligere i seng", der jo er meget nemmere sagt end gjort. I starten af skoleåret holdt jeg op med al aktivitet, der foregik efter kl 21-22, inkl. arbejde, sådan at jeg kunne komme tidligt i seng og få mere ud af skolen. Det viste sig, at der ikke findes særligt meget aktivitet der ender før kl. 21, så efter skole gik jeg og kedede mig, som så mindskede motivationen til at gå i skole og lave lektier. Og så gjorde det ingen forskel på, hvornår jeg lagde mig til at sove. En almindelig teenagers dagligdag er simpelthen ikke indrettet til at gå så tidligt i seng.

    Jeg er en af dem, der kræver rigtig meget søvn, og det er ikke mit første forsøg på at komme igennem gymnasiet. For mig er mødetiderne et stort problem for min uddannelse.

  4. Spændende diskussion. Jeg er ikke imod, at man eksperimenterer med mødetider, hvis det giver mening, jeg er bare påpasselig med at drage hurtige konklusioner af forskning (som måske er bygget mere eller mindre på gisninger). Jeg synes det er fint, at man gør sig nogle forsøg rundt omkring (og en kostskole er jo et oplagt sted) – bare man husker på, at der også er unge, der hellere vil op og i gang, og dermed have tidligere fri til andre ting (sport, musik osv.) Tak for input 🙂

    • Glemmer du ikke, at den hurtigste konklusion altid lander på plejer? Hvad er det for gisninger, der ligger til grund for klokken 8.00 som den dominerende mødetid?

      Ifølge Camilla Kring, er der flere unge, der hellere vil op senere. Lige nu er mødetiderne, ifølge hende, indrettet, så de passer omkring 15% af befolkningen (det kan vi kalde mindretalsbeskyttelse og det er meget vigtigt i et demokrati). De resterende – kunne man så gisne om – ville hellere benytte den sene aften og tidlige nat på andre ting, som f.eks. sport, musik og fritidsarbejde.

      Døgnet bliver jo ikke kortere af en ændring; blot bliver det muligt for en hel del at indrette døgnet på en sådan måde, at de kan opnå en højere livskvalitet.

  5. Jeg kan kun give dig 100 % ret og synes selv det er en skam man ikke har indført det flere steder – især på højskoler! Jeg gik selv på Testrup (http://testrup.dk) og for mig så var det selvfølgelig vigtigt at få ny viden og blive bedre til at spille musik, men det var nu klart med det sociale som motivationsfaktor dengang jeg tog beslutningen om at tage et år på højskole. Og her synes jeg især det halter efter for de fleste højskoler, fordi hvornår skal eleverne have tid til at sove? Når man først er færdig med alle dagens pligter osv. så vil man jo også gerne have tid til at lave sociale aktiviteter om aftenen – og før man får set sig om er klokken mange. Og så er det altså ikke optimalt at skulle op kl 7 næste morgen, det kan man jo slet ikke som teenager klare.
    Derved ikke sagt mit højskole år ikke var fedt, det var et fantastisk år og jeg elskede alt ved skolen, men tror bare at man kunne optimere det meget mere ved at møde senere, så håber det snart bliver normalen fremfor undtagelsen at møde kl 10 eller lignende.

    Обустройство скважины
